After 2 games of double overtime ties, the Guilford squad had to prepare for ODAC opponent Washington and Lee. Since this was a ODAC conference game the Guilford soccer team knew that no result less than a win would be satisfying. The day was perfect for a soccer game, it was parent’s weekend and it was one of the biggest crowds that they have had all year.
As Guilford got ready for the game, the atmosphere was electric. The crowed was really into the game and was behind the Quakers 100 percent. The game kicked off with a rough start as Washington and Lee Captain #13 James Pymm opened the scoring with a goal off a scrabble in front of the net. He tucked the ball away near post on the Guilford keeper. It was a wake up call for the Guilford team; within 10 minutes Freddy Gomez played a beautiful ball to Amir Moore, who rocked a shot that went top self, tying the game at 1 to 1.
The half ended 1 to 1 and Guilford knew they needed to step up there game if they wanted to get the 3 points out of this game. At half all that was said to the Guilford team is that you need to win this game; they need to go out and take the game. (Jeff here...amazing what the players hear compared to what is actually said! Too funny!)
The second half was a battle. Guilford came out with a purpose and in the 64th minute Chris Matteo had a shot that went just wide. The game was going back and forth until the 72nd minute when the leading score for Guilford Jordan Alexander also know as “Clutch” beat the goalie to the ball and put it into the back of the net. The crowed went nuts and Guilford team knew that they were headed for victory. With a late penalty kick, Freddy Gomez sealed the game for the Quakers.
