I will start this post from the end of the evening to my morning…big day!
Okay, I just spent an evening chatting and smiling with Emily’s dear cousin, Joe. He too goes to Guilford…but in Surrey, not Greensboro. He will begin his last year in University studying the piano, and then perhaps become a teacher. I was drawn to him a bit, the energy he gave out, not fully sure of himself, but enough to make conversation, his voice adding something to the discussion, asking questions of the group and me, made him seem like a real genuine bloke as they say. Emily made a delicious dinner for about 7 of us, I got some white wine, and we dined! I ended up sitting next to Joe at the table and we chatted about school, America versus England, I guess some cultural differences. But the way he talked about the piano, just reminded me of a friend of mine who plays the classical guitar, Andrew. There was passion, and doubt (in ability and whether the instrument is actually worth studying, or at the end of the day is it all rubbish). It was really nice to be around Joe, because he did remind me of a good friend of mine, and it also reminded me that although I am not clicking with everyone in the group, there are still people around that I can connect with.Enough of Joe…I HAD MY FIRST CLASS TODAY!!! It was so so so amazing. It is called Transnational Studies: Global Diasporas and the professor is Dr. Raijini Paja (I think, I don’t have my syllabus in front of me). Basically it is the coolest class ever, she is so great, super flexible, all about collaboration, she has incorporated many field trips, (many of which will include either lunch or dinner!!) and her assignments sound interesting! There are 14 of us I think, 1 boy, his name is Joe too come to think of it. I started talking with him on our break (yes a break because our classes here are 3 hours long…I am not sure how that became okay with people) but anyways he seems cool and I am looking forward to having a friend outside of the flat. We will be learning about the Black culture, the Asian (here that means South Asian), the Jewish population, and also learning about some religions like Islam and Sikh. This class will really broaden my view, I cannot wait to get started.
(so some little birds have chirped that London’s semester is pretty easy on the academic side…but I can tell you straight up so far just having this one class that I will be a busy busy girl reading and writing, yes, so no fear you academic supporters, I will be working)
Tomorrow I will have my British Life and Cultures and Social Welfare in the UK. Woot woot.
This morning I was so motivated to go to the gym. I woke up early put my shoes on, walked out of the door and about half way there I realized I forgot my water bottle, no biggie, whatever, but then as I was standing in front of the Club door I realized I didn’t have my membership card. Now I probably could have gone in anyways, but I have only been once before, and I didn’t want to push it. So lesson learned, but card in wallet…check. (also, it takes 15 minutes to walk there, and to walk back to the flat and then out again…well that would have been my workout there.) Have no fear though, I told myself I would go for a walk in the park, but by the time I got my caramel macchiato (still not quite sure what it is) and picked out school supplies (a wonderful pleasure of mine) got cash out of the ATM, well it was time to eat breakfast and get ready for class. So no workout today, but hopefully tomorrow.
Oh oh oh I have discovered the most fantastic thing!!!........International Student House. They have this travel club, and for 5 pounds to join I can pay super cheap prices for AMAZING places. I might go on a day trip to Canterbury this Saturday…and in December there is a trip to Salisbury and Stonehedge with an amazing Christmas market for an amazing deal. They also have pretty reduced prices at the Royal Albert Hall, I might so see The Fray, along with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and other goodies too.
Phew I feel good. Relaxed, excited, happy, what more could a girl want?
I’ll definitely post about tomorrow’s beginnings of classes…because I am sure all of you want to know every detail, and feel like you were sitting in class right next to me…It’s okay, you can admit that, I won’t think too much or too less of you for that.
Goodnight my dear ones, be well.
