Science Direct from Off Campus: Updated 9/17

UPDATE:  Science Direct (and all of our other databases available through the Hege Library Web site) is now working both on and off campus.

9/16/2009:  We have reported difficulties with student trying to use Science Direct from off campus.  This resource is intended for both on campus and off campus access.  We are currently working to resolved this problem and will update when everything is fully functional.  Until then, access to Science Direct remains fully available on campus.

REMINDER:  Let us know if you have trouble accessing any of the library's resources available through our Web site.  Most databases are fully available both on and off campus with your Guilford network log-in and updates are explored whenever we learn of students experiencing technical difficulties.  Thanks!

CCH Research: Service Update

CCH Tax Research is now accessible to Guilford College students and faculty both on and off campus.  Off campus researchers need to go through the library's Web page and enter their campus log-on information when prompted.  An error message might display saying that the webpage's certificate is expired.  If the happens, then click "continue to website." You will then have an opportunity to create your new user accounts or login for CCH.

Temporary Network Outage

The library computer network will be temporarily unavailable from approximately 8:30 to 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3.  The library's Web site will be fully functional from computers outside of the library.  However, there will not be access within the library building to the Internet, printing, or campus network services during the outage.

Important Notice for Guilford Students Using Library Computers

UPDATE (9/28/2009):  The problems with Microsoft Word experienced by students earlier this semester should be resolved due to a fix implemented last Friday.  Therefore, alternative methods of saving work should not be necessary.  Please let ITS know if you still have problems after this fix.

Original Notice (9/2/2009):  Due to problems that have been found in trying to save work in Microsoft Word, IT&S requests that students use GOOGLE DOCUMENTS for word processing until the problem is fully resolved.

Please use Google Documents to ensure that important materials will not be lost.

Google Docs can be found by logging on to your Guilford email account, clicking on the “documents” tab at the top of the page, and then opening a new document.  All materials will be saved in your email account.

Laptops Temporarily Unavailable

The laptop computers normally available for library use from the circulation desk are temporarily grounded for inventory and upgrades.  Laptops are unavailable Tuesday, September 1 - Monday, September 8.  We apologize for this necessary inconvenience as we made improvements in our laptop options and services.

Renovations Underway

Please excuse our mess as we undergo construction in the Information/Reference Services area of Hege Library this August.  The Information Village desktop computers are temporarily unavailable.  Guilford community members can use the Betty Place Digital Classroom computers on the lower level or check out laptops from the front desk for use anywhere in the building.  These renovations will provide staff with adequate office spaces convenient to student researchers.  The Information Village computers were upgraded over the summer.  They will be back soon and available for student use their new location to the right of the Information/Reference Desk.

Carnegie Chamber Series

The Eastern Music Festival's Carnegie Chamber Series will be held in Hege Library's Carnegie wing on Tuesday evenings from June 30 - July 28.  Most areas of the library will remain available to students for research and study.  However, access to the Carnegie wing will be limited on Tuesday evenings.  A full series description and ticket information is available at http://www.easternmusicfestival.org/schedule.php#guil.

NC LIVE Message Regarding New Resources for 2009

Hege Library subscribes to NC LIVE to provide the Guilford community with access to a number of useful research tools.  You can either go to NC LIVE to search across these resources or go directly to one of the specific research tools through our database links under Electronic Resources.  Be sure to go through the Hege Library pages if you want to gain access from off campus.  Contact us if you are seeking additional information about these new items or need assistance finding other resources available through Hege Library.  See below for the latest news from NC LIVE and links to new featured databases.

OCLC has expanded the FirstSearch Base Package to provide more content and services.  In January we were able to announce the retention of our CAMIO resource as a result of this change.  In addition, to providing CAMIO NC LIVE's subscription now includes several new databases which we are releasing to the NC LIVE web site this evening. They will be available tomorrow via the Browse links on our web site and searchable via our EZ & Advanced Search in the next few days.
