NC-PALS Update: Catalog Available Sunday, 1/31

The scheduled maintenance for Sunday, Jan. 31, has been posponed due to anticipated weather conditions.  Therefore, the NC-PALS catalog will be available all day.

24 Hour Access for Exams!

Hege Library will provide 24 hour access from Sunday December 13th at Noon until Friday December 19th at 6pm.

Coffee and refreshments will be available in the library lounge (directly across from the art gallery) starting at 9pm on Sunday the 13th.

Librarians are here to help! Use our new Request a Consultation service to schedule a time to get some one-on-one assistance with your assignment. Librarians are available for consultations any time that the reference desk is open. We can help you with all of the following:

• Narrowing your topic
• Finding scholarly articles, newspaper articles, books, primary sources and other resources on your topic
• Citing resources in the appropriate citation style

Create a bibliography in 5 seconds?

It sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? Zotero, a Mozilla Firefox extension, allows you to almost instantly create correctly formatted citations and bibliographies.

You like Google, right?

Guilford faculty, students and staff can now use the power of Google Scholar to access the Hege Library's vast collection of subscription electronic resources. Google Scholar now includes links to the full text of Guilford's electronic journal subscriptions; look for articles marked with the "Guilford Journal Finder" link.

Google Scholar enables users to search for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research. To access Google Scholar, please visit the following URL:

Open Access Week, Oct. 19-23, 2009

It's Open Access Week!

Open Access is the principle that all research should be freely accessible online, immediately after publication. Open-access (OA) literature is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions.

Why should you care about Open Access?

As an author
You will have a larger potential audience than any subscriber-restricted journal can give you, even the most prestigious. Open access can increase the impact of your work, shorten the delay between acceptance and publication, and make your articles more effective by making them easier to find and use. Your work will be visible to every search and retrieval tool.

As a reader
You will have free online access to the literature necessary for your research.

As a teacher
You will know that your students have convenient access to the information they need. With Open Access literature, the author or copyright holder has given permission in advance for making and distributing copies. No more delays, doubts, or fees. No more fair-use judgment calls, fear of liability, and painful decisions to err on the side of caution and non-use.

Library Centennial Fun Facts

Questions to a variety of historical tidbits from the library's history are featured in the Guilford Buzz throughout the month of October.  Test your knowledge each day.  Many of the answers can be found in the "My How Times Have Changed: The Library Turns 100" exhibit in the main hallway.

Science Direct from Off Campus: Updated 9/17

UPDATE:  Science Direct (and all of our other databases available through the Hege Library Web site) is now working both on and off campus.

9/16/2009:  We have reported difficulties with student trying to use Science Direct from off campus.  This resource is intended for both on campus and off campus access.  We are currently working to resolved this problem and will update when everything is fully functional.  Until then, access to Science Direct remains fully available on campus.

REMINDER:  Let us know if you have trouble accessing any of the library's resources available through our Web site.  Most databases are fully available both on and off campus with your Guilford network log-in and updates are explored whenever we learn of students experiencing technical difficulties.  Thanks!

Anna Ray Joins Library Staff in Access Services

Anna Ray is the new Assistant for Access Services.  She assists Susan McClanahan, the Access Services Manager, with the workflow for Reserves and our newly improved Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services. Anna also will provide back-up supervision of student workers and general support of the Access Services Department.
