Mary Hobbs Hall was constructed in 1907 to further the vision of Mary Mendenhall Hobbs in her belief that women should have equal and affordable access to education. Today, Hobbs Hall still stands and its symbolism endures. It is time for us to guarantee that legacy by updating this treasure to meet the needs of today's students.
Plans have been made to renovate the building while preserving the historic structure. These plans include upgrading the electrical, plumbing and HVAC infrastructure to meet LEED certification and help meet Guilford's energy savings, carbon footprint and overall sustainability goals. In addition, the parlors will be restored to their former style with a central two-story, open ceiling and side staircases.
The most exciting news is the reinstatement of the cooperative-living program. Currently, three co-op rotations are being considered: Hobbs girls working in their own garden, planting and growing fruits, vegetables, herbs, etc. for their own use or by the college. Secondly, working at the Greenleaf coffee shop, located in the basement of Hobbs, where students manage and operate the self-sustaining business. Lastly, a housekeeping component will be on-going. The ladies will clean their own space and a rotating schedule is being planned for shared spaces such as the parlors and bathrooms. We believe these co-ops, though not the same as former options, will still bring a sense of camaraderie and responsibility among the girls, as well as relevant experiences for success in today's economy.
Once it is renovated, Hobbs Hall will be well prepared for another century of service to Guilford students. Historic tax credits will reduce the overall cost of the project to an estimated $1.8 million. We can begin renovations once $500,000 is raised.
