Amanpour's New CNN Interview Program Debuts Sept. 21

Christiane Amanpour's new interview program, "Amanpour," debuts Monday, Sept. 21.  It will air live Monday through Friday at 3 p.m. on CNN International and Sundays at 2 p.m. on CNN.  Click here to see a preview.

“I want this show to stir the global conscience. I have witnessed so much that it’s time to start making real sense of it all," said Amanpour, who is the network's chief international correspondent. “I learned to seek facts and to tell the truth no matter how difficult or unpopular, and to not accept a false moral equivalence when none exists. I want to provide a forum for others to do the same.”

CNN states that each show will primarily focus on one topic and will feature guests who "challenge and deconstruct conventional wisdom."  Read more about the program here.

Meanwhile, the next installment of "Amanpour Reports," a documentary entitled "Generation Islam," will debut Thursday, Aug. 13, at 9 p.m. on CNN.

Amanpour takes viewers to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Gaza to see and hear from young Muslims. The documentary premieres just one week before Afghanistan’s national elections, as the U.S. intensifies its war efforts in Afghanistan and as the Obama Administration seeks to forge a new relationship with Muslim nations.

Amanpour and her husband, James Rubin, spoke in the Bryan Series in November 2008.

Krugman Talks about Health Care Reform on "Fresh Air"

Paul Krugman debated the financing of America's health care system with fellow economist Stuart Butler on the NPR program "Fresh Air," hosted by Terry Gross, July 28.  Hear the show by clicking here.

Krugman argues that free markets alone can't fix the health care system. Butler, who is vice president of the Heritage Foundation, advocates a restructured system based on consumer choice.

Krugman is scheduled to speak in the Bryan Series Nov. 3.  Single-event tickets for all four subscription programs in this year's series go on sale Aug. 1.

Krugman, Brooks on ABC's "This Week" Roundtable July 26

Paul Krugman and David Brooks are among participants in the roundtable discussion during ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" Sunday, July 26.  The program airs at 11 a.m.

They will join ABC’s George Will, former George W. Bush adviser Ed Gillespie, and the Huffington Post’s Arianna Huffington to discuss the week in politics.

Also on the show:  an exclusive health care debate between Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., and Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C.  -- who has said that health care reform could be President Obama’s “Waterloo.”

Krugman speaks in the Bryan Series Nov. 3.  Brooks gave a talk at Guilford in November 2006.

Update:  Krugman commented on the state of the current recession (video begins after a short commercial), saying it is over "probably in a very limited sense," and comparing it to a recession in 2001 that officially ended though unemployment continued to rise.  Newsweek's Aug. 3 cover feature was referenced.

Guilford College Art Gallery to Exhibit "Doonesbury in a Time of War"

Guilford College Art Gallery will feature the work of Garry Trudeau in an exhibit entitled "Doonesbury in a Time of War" Aug. 31-Oct. 11.  Trudeau, who will open this year's Bryan Series Oct. 7, is providing a series of his Doonesbury cartoons for display in the gallery, located in Hege Library on campus.

The exhibit is free and open to the public.  The gallery is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 2-5 p.m.  More information about the gallery is available here.

On Sunday, Oct. 4, Chris Lamb, associate professor of communication at the College of Charleston, will speak about Trudeau's work.  The free program will be in the gallery from 3-5 p.m. and includes a reception.  Lamb is the author of Drawn to Extremes: The Use and Abuse of Editorial Cartoons in the United States.  The event is sponsored by the Guilford College Friends of the Library.

Tutu: World Cup will have Huge Impact for South Africa

Archbishop Desmond Tutu recently told a London audience that hosting the FIFA World Cup will boost the morale and self-esteem of South Africans and "make us gel as a nation."

Tutu, who spoke in the Bryan Series in November 2005, was addressing a group of 500 people in St. Paul's Cathedral on the topic "Beyond Sport."  He discussed the economic and social benefits of hosting the world championship for the sport of soccer (football).

The World Cup is held every four years.  The 2010 event is scheduled June 11-July 11 at various venues in South Africa.

Summer Reading: Krugman Suggests Two Books To TIME

When TIME asked some of its favorite writers what they read when they read for fun, Paul Krugman offered a forthcoming Steig Larsson sequel and a biography of Cornelius Vanderbilt.

Krugman, who speaks in the Bryan Series Nov. 3, was among writers contributing their picks to an arts feature in the July 13 issue of the news magazine.

He said he's looking forward to the publication of The Girl Who Played with Fire, which is scheduled for release in late July.  It is the sequel to the bestselling murder mystery The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which he says he "read with great enjoyment while traveling through Asia. Clever stuff--and a financial journalist as the hero!"

Krugman said he recently downloaded The First Tycoon by T.J. Stiles, about the rise of American icon Cornelius Vanderbilt, onto his Kindle.

Former Bryan Series speaker Madeleine Albright (November 2001) recommended Midnight's Children by former speaker Salman Rushdie (February 2009), saying it is a "brilliant story of the history of India and Pakistan, with magical realism filled in."

Powell Discusses America's Promise on CNN's "State of the Union"

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who spoke in the Bryan Series in December 1999, discussed America's Promise, the organization he founded to help children, on CNN's "State of the Union" July 5.

His interview with host John King covered a variety of topics, including Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan.  Ten minutes of the interview were devoted to America's Promise, which was the subject of his Bryan Series talk.  Click here to view that segment of the interview.
